Can I source 6V+ from the 11 board?

The "Eleven" is our Uno-equivalent Arduino-compatible board, but with a number of improvements including prototyping area, a mini-USB connector, LEDs mounted near the edge, and the D13 LED isolated using a FET. [Product page]

Can I source 6V+ from the 11 board?

Post by rachalmers » Tue Sep 09, 2014 2:19 pm

I'm wondering if it's possible to source 6V+ from the 11 board, as I need it in the following circuit, using the MAX3232 breakout board from Sparkfun. It doesn't have the MAX3232 pin 2 on the breakout. That's where I can source the 6v+ from if it was.

This is the circuit. You can see I need the V+ from pin 2 to drive the RTS_High, DB9, pin 7.

If you're making this as a shield AND you're powering the Eleven from a voltage source (from the DC barrel jack) that would be fine for running the MAX3232 chip, then you will most likely find that you can tap this source off the VIN pin on the Eleven.

Note: This will be unregulated by the Eleven. If you want it regulated, you will need to provide the regulation, either on your shield, or prior to feeding it to the Eleven. I would recommend feeding no less than 7V into the DC barrel jack, as the regulator on the Eleven needs some margin available to it to work properly.

eg: Using a 9V plugpack should work fine for both the Eleven and you can regulate this down to 6V for the MAX 3232 unless it can take the full 9V. If it can take the full 9V, use a regulated 9V plugpack and you can avoid any regulator circuitry on the shield.
