two atmega chips, ouch, you replacing them by simply pulling them out the socket and replacing them?.. for example some boards simply of the atmega mounted, once fried you may as well throw the whole thing out unless you have the tools to remove/solder heat gun it again. anyway... I agree but i'm really starting to suspect the wiznet is just not up to the job, even for doing very little once a day :( but yeah a low cost webserver wold be wonderful, but we might have to rely on something like the Rasberry Pi for such a task.
